My Review:

THE LAST THING I SAW by Alex Sinclair is a gripping psychological thriller told in before and after. We know something happened to Emma Turner but, we are thrown bits and pieces to put together to learn the full story. Emma Turner seems to have a normal life. She has a husband, Darren and a teenage son, Jayden. They are a regular family with their ups and downs. Why then, does Emma Turner wake up in a psychiatric hospital with no memory of how or why she got there?

Through therapy sessions, Emma knows that something traumatic has happened to her but, her mind has shut down to protect itself. She seems to have had a psychotic breakdown brought on by post traumatic stress disorder. Little by little she starts to remember what happened on the day that changed her entire life.

The story really builds on the suspense. I was glued to the pages right from the start and I have to say, I had a really tough time trying NOT to flip the pages to the end of the story to find out what really happened! Alex Sinclair really knows how to write a psychological suspense. I was pretty much kept on my toes trying to figure out what the catalyst was that landed Emma in the hospital. Right when I thought I knew the answers, there was a twist that shot my theory down. I found that the mystery and suspense really kept me engaged and invested in the story.

Emma was such a well thought out character and you could feel all of the emotions she was going through. You could almost feel her hurt at not being able to see her family and wondering why her family were never there to visit her while in the hospital. You can sense the inner turmoil she is going through and it made me feel sympathetic towards her character. I wanted her to remember and at the same time I was hoping that the memory of the night in question didn’t break her even more.

All in all, THE LAST THING I SAW is one of the best psychological thrillers I have read in a very long time. It is a slow build up character driven story with just the right amount of twists that will blow you away when the truth finally comes out. Alex Sinclair really knows how to build up on the suspense and keep you guessing to the very end.

My Review:

Life hasn’t always been easy for Ella Gadot. Her perfect world was shattered during her teenage years when a tragedy hit too close to home. Since then, she made it her life’s goal to work for the FBI in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. Roadblock after roadblock stood in her way until finally she was given the opportunity at her dream job. Only, her dream job comes with a price. Ella has garnered herself a serial killer determined to make her his prey.

No one can understand monsters.
No one can explain this evil.
No one can ever justify them.
But there are people who can catch them

Everyone who knows me knows that I have a fascination with serial killers. So, when I read the back blurb to this story, I knew I had to read it. This story is unlike anything I have ever read before and really made me think about what goes on in the mind of serial killers. When we think of serial killers, we imagine someone utterly evil, manipulative, and psychopathic. While this is true, we never look at their lives in general. Sure, they are vile, but some can lead ordinary lives (outside of killing) have a wife/girlfriend, or may even have children. I like how the author gives the Psychopath in this story an actual story and as a reader, I couldn’t help myself from feeling all these emotions because the characterization was so phenomely done. On one hand, you want to hate the Psychopath and on the other hand you can relate to what he does and what he has become. I have NEVER read a fictional story where a serial killer was given this much life. His backstory and his present story intertwined in such a way that I actually felt bad for wanting him to be caught.

How is it possible to live without remorse? And how good a manipulator do you have to be to live in constant deception, a wolf in sheep’s clothes?

Ella was also such a fascinating character as well. Her backstory is heartbreaking and shaped her life today. She wants to catch the bad guys, the serial killers who leave a mass of destruction in their wake. The tragic event in her earlier teenage years has shaped her life and yet she dives in head first in a career that might not necessarily be the best choice given her background. Ella is a fantastic lead character who is smart and yet innocent and unaware at the same time. She is fierce and determined, two great qualities any great heroine should possess. I really loved her character as well and felt that she was a multi dimensional character that we all could feel sorry for, but yet understand at the same time why she does what she does.

The story is dark and yet little pieces of are thrown at you in such a way that will leave you torn on how the story should end. There is violence and scenes that will make you shiver. Please do not let that deter you from picking this story up. The story has so many layers and goes from the past to the present and really digs deep into both the Psychopath’s life as well as Ella’s life as you learn about them and their backstory.

Suspend everything you think you know while delving into this story. V.F. Mason takes you on a ride that is sometimes heartbreaking and yet at the same time thoroughly horrifying. I absolutely LOVED it! Even the twists have twists. PSYCHOPATH’S PREY is simply outstanding and definitely one of my very top reads of the year. Please do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this story. You will not regret it.

About the Author:
V.F.Mason always loved reading books and had quite a few fights with her momma over the genre she liked (romance, duh!) She studied filmmaking and thought that would feed her desire for stories, but that didn’t happen. Finally, when she was tired of all those voices in her head, she sat down and wrote a book. It was a huge decision to make and she thanks her friends and family for supporting her in it. When she is not writing, she can be found with her friends doing all sorts of crazy things or reading recent romance books that were written by her favorite authors.

Series: Crazy Love #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Number of Pages: 219
Publisher: Loveswept
Publishing Date: January 9, 2018
My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

Teagan Monroe is having a really bad day. First, she gets fired from her job at the library only to come back home to find her boyfriend of seven years getting it on with another woman…in their bed, no less! Deciding on leaving him, she packs up all of her belongings and loads her Prius and is off. Luck certainly is not on her side when she rear ends the Mercedes in front of her. The Mercedes belongs to none other than the richest playboy in all of Portland, Corbin Lane.

Corbin Lane is also having a really bad day. His grandmother passed away recently and today was the reading of her will. A stipulation was set where he had to marry within the next six months and stay married for two years in order to get his grandmother’s house that he loved so much. On top of the news he has received, he gets rear ended. Only, the gorgeous woman who steps out of the Prius may just be the answer he has been in search of.

Can an unlucky day for both Teagan and Corbin turn into something much much more then either one of them bargained for?

I have to say that the fake wife/marriage of convenience trope is probably one of my favorites. I know, I know its been played so many times, but I still can’t seem to get enough of them. Something about two people coming together under false pretenses and realizing they were made for each other makes me want to do a happy dance. So, I knew that this book, after reading the blurb, was right in my wheelhouse. I am so glad to say that FAKE WIFE did not disappoint.

I really loved both Teagan and Corbin. They are both multi-dimensional characters and the author, Stacey Lynn, did a great job bringing them to life for me. Teagan is your normal average girl. She may not have a lot of money but, she has a heart of gold. She is down to earth and loving. Corbin on the other hand is rich and comes from old money. All he has ever dated were socialites who wanted him for his money. When Corbin meets Teagan, he instantly recognizes that she is different from the rest. He slowly starts to open up to her about his dysfunctional family and in the process they start to get closer. Will their new fondness for each other lead to their happily ever after or will obstacles stand in their way?

FAKE WIFE is a lighthearted, quick and easy read. While there is nothing particularly new about the story, I still really enjoyed the story and the characters. Stacey Lynn really knows how to write sweet and emotional characters who are not afraid to say how they feel.  There is some conflict, but it wrapped up rather nicely.  Much better than I ever anticipated actually, which came as quite a surprise to me.  I do have to say though that the secondary characters – Caitlin and Trey – can they please have a story? I would really love to see a friends to lovers story for these two.

If you love a marriage of convenience theme, I would really suggest you pick up a copy of FAKE WIFE and fall in love with the characters like I have.

Unfamiliar emotions swirl through me; although I’m not sure a euphoric rush of adrenaline at remembering her fear-filled voice could be considered an emotion.

But what brought even more anticipation?

Her mind.

Her desire to catch me is so strong; she sees outside the box and digs into details other people might never notice.

How can I not enjoy playing a game with her?

She would have been a great asset to the team helping catch the likes of me.

Too bad my case will be the first and last she’ll ever have.

You thought he’d come to save you. You were wrong.

How can someone vanish without a single trace?

Deborah Jenkins pulls her coat around her for the short walk home in the pouring rain. But she never makes it home that night. And she is never seen again…

Four years later, an abandoned baby girl is found wrapped in dirty rags on a doorstep. An anonymous phone call urges the police to run a DNA test on the baby. But nobody is prepared for the results.

The newborn belongs to Deborah. She’s still alive…

My Review:

Debbie Jenkins disappeared four years ago while on her way home from work. She was never seen or heard from again. She left behind a husband and children who never forgot her. Everyone thought she was more than likely dead. Imagine everyone’s surprise when a newborn is found by the library steps and a DNA match proves that Debbie is the mother. What happened to Debbie and why would she abandon her own baby?

THE NEXT GIRL is the first book in the Detective Gina Harte series. Right from the start I loved Gina. She is a great detective and knows how to get things done. Although, she is a great detective, she is also flawed as well. She has a past that she is reluctant to reveal especially to her own daughter. Gina is hot on the case though, while dealing with her own issues, looking for clues along with her colleagues in their search to find Debbie.

I love that we get inside the heads of all the characters. Debbie’s husband Luke in all intents and purposes is still in love with his wife. He is reluctant to move on, but after four years he finally starts to let himself go of the past when he feels a connection to a new woman. I often times find in similar types of stories where the wife disappears and comes back years later, we never get the chance to find out what the husband is feeling. So, this was quite refreshing to see and feel all the hurt and the confusion Luke is now feeling as he moves on to a new relationship. We also learn more about Debbie through Debbie’s view. We learn what has happened to her and how she has managed to survive despite all of the horrors she has been through.

This story is one that could have been ripped through the headlines. How many women disappear never to be heard from again? Too many to even begin to count. The realism is paramount and takes center stage and really makes you wonder what you would do if you were kidnapped or taken against your will. Would you fight, would you make your kidnapper believe anything in order to stay alive? Debbie lives through this and we get to see what she goes through through her eyes and thoughts. It is creepy….very very creepy.

THE NEXT GIRL by Carla Kovach is a gripping and phenomenal story that is all so real. You can’t help but to be sucked right in following along through all the twists and turns. The story started off strong and never wavers. The story moves along at a fast pace and I found myself unable to put it down. I can’t express how much I highly rate this book and story line itself, I can now say, it will probably be on my top ten for the year. Please do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this book right from the beginning.

Don’t trust your friends. Don’t trust your family. Don’t trust yourself…

When a young mother is found dead in her home with a mysterious symbol drawn on her body, DI Katie Rhodes is shaken to her core; it’s a perfect match to the birthmark she once saw on her old partner, Nathan Radley.

Formerly one of the best criminal psychologists on the police force, Nathan was renowned for getting deep into the minds of the murderers he hunted. But for the past year he has lived in isolation, terrified of losing control over his own dark desires…

Katie swore she’d never knock on Nathan’s door again, but when another woman’s body is found, she knows she doesn’t have a choice.

As the body count rises and the calling cards get increasingly personal, Katie and Nathan realise that someone very close to them is playing a dangerous game. Who can they trust, and how many more innocent lives will be taken before they can crack this disturbing riddle?

An absolutely nail-biting serial-killer thriller. Fans of The Girl in the Ice, or anything by Angela Marsons or Rachel Abbott will not want to miss this page-turning debut!

My Review:

There is a serial killer loose on the streets of London targeting and killing mothers. He is a twisted and sick killer leaving chat bubbles next to each of his victims on display. DI Katie Katie Rhodes is dropped right in the middle of the case. She knows the only person who can help her solve the case is profiler Nathan Rhodes. Katie believes the killings are linked to both her and Nathan and she will do everything she can to stop this killer even if it means breaking the vow she made to leave Nathan alone.

Katie has been on a downward spiral due to a case she worked on a year ago. She hasn’t ever really recovered from it and you can see this in her actions. She is drinking more and taking solace with different men. Nathan on the other hand is a brilliant criminal profiler that can easily get into the minds of killers, but something in the past has left him in a dark, dark place. Nathan is now living in seclusion for the better part of a year. His seclusion is about to be upturned when Katie breaks her vow to leave him alone. Together, they both need to learn to trust one another again, while revealing secrets of their past, as they hunt to catch and stop a killer.

DARK LIES is the first book in the Rhodes and Radley crime series and it starts off with a bang. Right off the bat we are in the mind of the serial killer as he kills and positions the body of a mother he had targeted. The reasoning behind his killings are played out throughout the story in twists and turns I never saw coming. What ties does this killer have to Katie and Nathan? The little tidbits of information thrown our way really left me flipping the pages just to find the answers.

DARK LIES is a gripping psychological thriller with nail biting scenes and twists where you least expect it. I could not put this book down at all and wound up reading the entire story in one night. The story is brilliantly told and I just loved how suspenseful and dark the story is. It is gruesome in parts and the author left little to the imagination. Nick Hollin hits you hard with the facts down to the last detail. What a great start to a series! I am hooked and can not wait for the next installment and case.
